MEETING OF CHARTISTS AT STOCKI'ORT . Oa Monday evening last , several thousands oi male and female Chartists were called toget ' -er on a vacant plot of ground near th « Social lnstitatioD , ( jreek-atnet , lor the purpose of hearing one of thoir rspr ^ fntatives in the National Convention , Mr . U Unen , and taking advice and instruction at the present eventful crisis—a crisis which a patriotic anvl lngh-nnnded chsractor verv aptly observed , wa ^ , ;' a time when England would either bo lost or won !" 1 he meeting was called for six o ' clock ; but , in con sequence of some unavoidable uelay , business did not commence until near eight ; nor could Mr . bronterre O Bnen join his constituents before nine , he ( m company with Mr . Leach , the Secretary ; having at that moment come from Manchester with the least possible delay .
Mr . John Wiurht , on being called to the chuir , congratulated the meeting on the attendance of SO many females ; it was the best proof that somethiuK was wrong . When they uaw their representatives ii ' i theHoaaoof Commons , who called the people to assist them to carry tho Reform Bill , which thay said would be the means of obtaining all that the people want , d—when th ^ y 8 aw these men , after they had gained their point , tnrnkg ronrid in thi . < way , and telling them that they need not expect any lurtner reform , it is was evidence , if nuj were wanted , that the middle class men were not the friends of tae people , and that tha people roust be n > ady for action on their own behalf . ( Hear . ) The Chartist * vrerennther blood-thirsty nor murderern : nor disposed te break the law in any shape or foTm becauge they knew that anarch y or confusion would be a great evil to society ; and situated as England
was as a commercial nation , tlv > shopkeepers and the working classes would bo tho greatest suiFerers . All that the people at larg * wante d were their righto ( and we'll have them too" ); and they can g « f them , too , TVithont shedding one drop of blood , if thay w ouli only carry out the recommendation of the Convention ; for , as Wakley told them , it was of as tench nso to petition the rock of Gibraltar as the House of Commons for redress of our grievances , lie cautioned the meeting to ba peaceabla ; and thereby shoTT their enemies that the working classes were fit to be trusted with Universal Suffrage ; for he had no doubt tLat Government had its spies and emissaries about , who woald not only strictly record thtt laugnnge used and the conduct of tae meeting generally : but would exaggerate them materially . ( Hear . ) Keep within th « law ; and assqredly we shall have " Eqnal righta and equallawa . '' Thi-s will give as all we want—this wo desire , and nothing less will we be satisfied with .
Mr . J ajieh Mitchell said , Mr . Let these pompous middle clas?—these shopkeepers and pubhctins only contemplate the maey empty shops in the borough ; and if that will not arouse their good seili > e , their sound judgment , and discretion , then , let poverty bring them to . ( Apulaus .- . ) The speaker next entered into the question of the Corn

The speaker retired amidst the applause of the immense multitude .
Mr . Isaac Johnhon followed . He also attacked the conduct of Joi . n Hamer ; he had so often led the working people on to victory , bnt he will never lead them again . The sacred month was near at hand ( not ten days off ); and , if properly followed up , would unquestionabl y sav ? the nation .
